Hal Luftig

Hal Luftig’s first Broadway credit was as a production assistant on Mame in 1983. More than four decades later, his name appears on productions that collectively account for over 23 Tony Awards, six Drama Desk Awards, and a Pulitzer Prize.

Luftig earned an MFA in Arts Management from Columbia’s School of the Arts before building his practice Off-Broadway and eventually across the full range of what Broadway can be. His shows include: Death and the Maiden (1992); Jelly’s Last Jam (1992); Angels in America (1993); Moon Over Buffalo (1995); The King and I (1996); The Diary of Anne Frank (1997); Annie Get Your Gun (1999); Thoroughly Modern Millie (New York, 2002; London, 2004); Movin’ Out (2002); The Normal Heart at the Public Theater (2004); Whoopi (2004); Legally Blonde (Broadway, 2007); All My Sons (2008); West Side Story (2009); Evita (2012); Here Lies Love (The Public Theater, New York & The National Theater, London, 2014; Broadway, 2023); The Elephant Man (New York, 2014; London, 2015); Children of a Lesser God (2018); David Byrne’s American Utopia (Broadway, 2020); Plaza Suite (Broadway, 2021; London, 2023); Life of Pi (Broadway, 2023). Notably, the 2013 Best Musical winner Kinky Boots, written by Cyndi Lauper and Harvey Fierstein, cemented his reputation for producing work that achieves both critical acclaim and significant cultural impact.

For Luftig, producing is more than financially backing a project; it is a complex balancing of timing, judgment, relationships, taste, pressure, and risk, all while serving as a dedicated advocate for the creative vision. In 2026 he brought that philosophy into a new structure with the launch of Halcyon Theatricals.
